A stolen smartphone is painful not only because of the financial loss but also due to the personal data stored on it. Often, the devices end up on other continents, particularly in China, as a recent case from London shows. The police uncovered an international network specializing in smartphone smuggling.
The Discovery at Heathrow
The Metropolitan Police in London struck a significant blow against smartphone theft. They tracked a stolen iPhone via the “Find My” service to a warehouse near Heathrow Airport. There, investigators found hundreds of devices prepared for export.
This chance discovery led to “Operation Echosteep,” a large-scale action against a network that smuggled tens of thousands of smartphones abroad. Police found over 2,000 phones in several locations and arrested numerous suspects.

Devices in High Demand in China
Within a year, the group reportedly moved around 40,000 stolen smartphones out of the United Kingdom, primarily to China. The devices are in high demand there, fetching significant profits. Street thieves received up to 300 pounds per device, while the phones sold in China for up to 5,000 U.S. dollars.
The network was structured and organized by division of labor: Local thieves collected the devices, middlemen sorted and packaged them, and smugglers transported them by sea and air. Apple devices were particularly targeted due to their high resale value worldwide and strong demand in China.
Protective Measures for Users
For users, it’s important to keep location services always enabled and use activation locks. These measures helped initiate investigations against the thieves. Additionally, smartphones should be protected with a secure PIN, Face ID, or fingerprint, and sensitive data should be encrypted.
When on the go, keep your device close to your body, especially in crowded places. In the event of theft, it’s advisable to report the loss to the provider immediately, block the SIM card, and locate the device. These steps increase the chances of recovering the smartphone or apprehending the perpetrators.
