Apple unexpectedly releases a new security update for several older iPhones and iPads. Some of the affected devices are considered obsolete and typically no longer receive regular updates. The reason for this new round of updates is a serious security issue.
The California-based manufacturer is known for being relatively generous with software updates. Typically, the company provides its devices with new versions or security updates for about six to eight years. After that, models are officially classified as “obsolete” or “discontinued.” From that point on, there are usually no more improvements for the operating system.
It may come as a surprise to many users that their older devices are currently receiving another update notification. Specifically, Apple is releasing versions iOS 15.8.7 and iOS 16.7.15. Corresponding versions of iPadOS are also available. In total, there are four new security updates. These are being installed on devices such as the iPhone 6s.
Even an 11-Year-Old iPhone Receives the Patch
The iPhone 6s has been out of regular update support since 2024. The smartphone is now 11 years old. Nevertheless, it is receiving another update. These devices vary in age, but they share a crucial point: They no longer support the current version of the iOS operating system.
In addition to this model, other devices benefit from the patch. These include:
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPhone SE 1
Some tablets are also receiving the update:
- iPad 5
- iPad mini 4
- iPad Pro (1st generation) in 9.7 and 12.9-inch formats

Security Flaw Due to Spyware Tool
The reason for the new updates is a security threat that was only recently made public. Security researchers from Google and the company iVerify reported in early March 2026 about malware called “Coruna.”
Cybercriminals are using this program specifically to target iPhones and iPads. Devices with iOS versions between 13 and 17.2.1 are affected. Coruna is believed to be a formerly very powerful spyware tool from the U.S. government’s cyber arsenal. An infection can occur simply by visiting a manipulated website.

Update Should Definitely Be Installed
Apple confirms in the update description of the new software versions that the updates secure the affected devices against attacks with Coruna. This is precisely why the company is providing the patches for devices that are no longer regularly supported. Anyone still using an older iPhone or iPad should install the new version as soon as possible. This is the only way to prevent potential attacks through the described security flaw.
