For the first time, specific data about the Google Pixel 9 has surfaced. However, these do not show any performance increase, which is usually expected with new smartphone generations.
The new Google Pixel 9 is expected in fall 2024. Yet, there are already many rumors and hints about the new device’s features. Now, performance data has appeared in the Geekbench database. TECHBOOK explains what these details mean and what Google Pixel users should anticipate.
Google Pixel 9 disappoints in Geekbench test
Recently, the upcoming Pixel flagship, the Google Pixel 9 Pro, underwent the benchmark test. Even there, the new G4 chip was disappointing. This chip is also used in the regular Pixel 9. As first reported by the Russian website “Rozetked,” Google apparently relies again on an octa-core chip, thus omitting one core. Although the individual chip components in the G4 have higher clock rates, they seemingly cannot compensate for the missing core in terms of performance.

Another interesting fact revealed by the benchmark test: The Google Pixel 9 is listed with only 8 GB of RAM. Initial hands-on leaks had firmly assumed 12 GB. Thus, Google is not increasing the RAM in its new smartphone generation but is installing 8 GB, as with the Pixel 8.
These performance data align with the previously leaked chip specs. This is particularly noteworthy because the Google Pixel 9 not only did not outperform its predecessor, but its performance was even lower.
What does the performance of the Google Pixel 9 mean for users?
However, it must be noted that these tests refer to prototypes of the Google Pixel 9. Google still has time until the fall launch to possibly tweak the performance. But even if the company improves the performance, it is unlikely to result in a noticeable leap between the 8th and 9th generation of Pixel devices. This is expected only with the Google Pixel 10 and the upcoming Tensor G5.
As previously mentioned, Google is likely to launch its Pixel 9 as usual in the fall. It is expected that Google will present four models: the regular Pixel 9, which the current tests focus on, the Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel Fold 2.
