Our lives are increasingly managed and controlled through smartphones. From news apps to scanner apps, health applications are also trending strongly.
They count steps while walking, offer shopping tips for gluten intolerance, or help manage migraines: The selection of health apps is vast. Almost half of smartphone owners in Germany (45 percent) use these helper programs.
This is shown by a representative survey commissioned by the IT association Bitkom. Leading the way are applications that record data, such as heart rate or distances walked. About one in four has such an app installed on their mobile device (27 percent). Twenty percent of respondents access knowledge about fitness, nutrition, or specific diseases through apps. Programs with reminder functions, such as for taking medication, are used less frequently (2 percent).
One in ten rejects the use of health apps. Some fear that sensitive data could fall into the wrong hands through the apps. Bitkom Research surveyed 1,003 people aged 14 and older.
