Apple waited a long time to equip the iPhone with wireless charging. However, the company now has one of the most robust charging systems in the smartphone world with MagSafe. A new standard is set to make charging even faster.

In 2020, MagSafe was revived with the introduction of the iPhone 12. The technology combines wireless charging with a magnetic ring for perfect alignment of the charging coil. The advantage: iPhone and charger are always optimally positioned, which increases performance and minimizes heat dissipation. So far, charging via MagSafe is limited to 25 watts in the iPhone 16. Now, regulatory documents have surfaced indicating a faster standard for future iPhones.

New MagSafe Accessories Could Charge the iPhone Faster

Apple is traditionally very cautious regarding the charging power of iPhones. The focus is more on reducing heat dissipation and thus increasing battery life. This also applies to wireless charging—where Apple has increased the power from the original 7.5 watts in the iPhone X to 15 watts with MagSafe (or Qi 2) and even 25 watts in the iPhone 16.

Qi 2 is an open standard that adopts the magnetic alignment of MagSafe. The leading Wireless Power Consortium had set the first version of the standard at 15 watts. However, a leaked Apple charger could now be the first to support the upcoming Qi 2.2 version, enabling even faster charging.

The gadget and price comparison portal “91mobiles” found entries at the Taiwanese regulatory authority National Communications Commission (NCC) showing new MagSafe chargers with Qi 2.2 support.

Visually, the devices are indistinguishable from their predecessors. The NCC database also lists two versions, which are recognizable in the stored images:

Unlike previous models (A2580 and A3250), the devices are reportedly compatible with Qi 2.2. Although the standard has not yet been officially announced, according to battery expert Anker, it supports a charging power of up to 50 watts. The images in the NCC database show that the new MagSafe chargers can charge at 15 volts with 3 amperes, resulting in a power of 45 watts—just below the theoretical maximum of Qi 2.2.

Which iPhone Models Will Get Faster Charging?

The NCC tested the new chargers with the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 11. It is therefore assumed that they are at least compatible with all iPhone models with MagSafe, as well as older iPhones with wireless charging.

However, this does not mean that they can take advantage of the higher charging power—it is even quite unlikely. Even the iPhone 16 Pro Max only supports charging at a maximum of 30 watts. The new MagSafe chargers are therefore likely to enable faster charging only in conjunction with the upcoming iPhone 17 and later models.
