As early as next year, the first foldable iPhone could hit the market. While little concrete information is known about the brand-new device, Apple’s communication with suppliers often provides a good basis for predictions. Data from a well-known analysis firm suggests that the iPhone Fold could feature the first high-resolution under-display camera.

Camera Details for All Upcoming iPhone Models

The well-known leaker Max Weinbach has released information about the camera hardware in the upcoming iPhone generations for the next two years on X (formerly Twitter). The data allegedly comes from financial giant JP Morgan. In addition to the iPhone 17e, 18/18 Pro, 18e, 19, or 20 Pro as well as iPhone Air 2 and Air 3, the document includes not only the first-generation iPhone Fold but also its successor.

The information for the individual models is broken down by front and rear cameras. Accordingly, the iPhone Fold is expected to have a dual camera on the back, consisting of a wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle lens–both with a 48-MP sensor underneath. However, Apple is likely to forgo a LiDAR sensor and sensor-shift stabilization to keep the casing as slim as possible. Apple introduced sensor shift as an upgrade to optical image stabilization with the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

iPhone Fold with First High-Resolution Camera of Its Kind

More intriguing, however, is the selfie camera. According to the leaked document, JP Morgan expects Apple to use an under-display camera for the first time. Unlike a traditional hole-punch camera, the display extends over the lens and turns off when the camera is in use.

While it wouldn’t be the first camera of its kind in a smartphone, the sensor is expected to be significantly higher resolution at 24 MP compared to competitors. Samsung recently installed a 4-MP sensor in the Galaxy Z Fold6, and models from other manufacturers have maxed out at 8 MP. It remains unclear how Apple might overcome the issue of visible pixel structure in the display, which has so far been the limiting factor for higher-resolution under-display camera sensors.

Information about the cameras in the iPhone Fold 2 is also found in the leak. However, neither the front nor the rear camera is expected to differ from the first-generation Apple foldable. Weinbach emphasizes, “JP Morgan and most bank analysts are very good at obtaining such information from the supply chain.” Unlike other leakers, the analysts do not seem to expect the anniversary iPhone in 2027 to feature an under-display camera.
