Apple has released iOS 26.6.1–possibly the last update before the major launch of iOS 27 next month. It is purely a security package with patches for a total of 29 vulnerabilities, including those affecting the iPhone.
Update lifted from beta
Apple itself states on its support page that iOS 26.6.1 includes “security improvements that were first made available with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.” In fact, the company took the unusual step of testing the update in advance as a standalone beta version.
Normally, Apple releases security patches and bug fixes along with larger updates (such as iOS 26.4, iOS 26.5, etc.). However, the spread of artificial intelligence in the development and detection of attack tools is increasingly putting pressure on the update schedule.
At the end of June, the company announced to Reuters that it would release security updates more quickly in the future, as AI accelerates the development of software for cyberattacks. Additionally, attackers could exploit known security vulnerabilities more quickly as a result.
The detection of threat vectors is also accelerated by the use of AI. Of the 29 vulnerabilities addressed by iOS 26.6.1, nine were discovered using OpenAI’s Codex Security. The tool is used to find and eliminate security gaps in program code.
iOS 26.6.1 closes numerous security gaps
Of the 29 entries found in Apple’s support document, 21 concern the browser engine WebKit, which provides the foundation for virtually all browsers available on the iPhone. Several errors could lead to memory issues and subsequently to crashes. This type of error also offers opportunities for further attacks.
Another vulnerability was found in the audio component of iOS, allowing apps to share sensitive user data. There was also an error in the phone function that allowed attackers to bypass protections and intercept network traffic.
Should you install the update right away?
Apple is not aware of any cases where hackers have actively exploited the vulnerabilities. Although installation is not urgent for this reason, it is recommended to install it promptly. Since details of the individual vulnerabilities are now publicly known, hackers have an easier time executing attacks.

iOS 26.6.1 is available for iPhone 11 and later in the settings under “General” > “Software Update” for download. The same security content is also available in the form of iPadOS 26.6.1 for iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later, iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) and later, iPad Air (3rd generation) and later, iPad (8th generation) and later, and iPad mini (5th generation) and later.
In addition to the current versions, Apple has also released iOS 18.7.10 and iPadOS 18.7.10. These updates are aimed at iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max, as well as iPad (7th generation), which do not support iOS 26 and iPadOS 26.
