Apple is preparing to launch iOS 26.5 with the release candidate–a final version that is only being tested for bugs. The update is relatively small, but one important new feature makes SMS communication more secure. Less welcome is the expansion of ads on the iPhone, which Apple is pushing forward in the Maps app.

iOS 26.5 Finally Brings RCS Encryption

With iOS 26.5, Apple finally introduces end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages on the iPhone. This ensures that content sent between iOS and Android devices is protected and cannot be intercepted and read by third parties.

Apple had already tested encrypted RCS messages in the beta phase of iOS 26.4, but the feature was removed in the final version. The company has confirmed in the release notes for iOS 26.5 that the encryption is now indeed coming.

Advertising in Apple Maps

A key component of iOS 26.5 is the preparation for advertising in the Maps app. Apple had already announced that businesses in the U.S. and Canada can place ads in search results. Google has been using a similar business model for years.

New is the “Suggested Places” section, which suggests locations based on trends, searches, and usage. Paid content is also expected to appear here in the future. Apple explains: “Ads in Maps appear when users search in Maps and can be displayed based on relevance both at the top of a user’s search results and at the top of a new ‘Suggested Places’ view in Maps.”

The ads will be clearly marked as advertising. Additionally, Apple emphasizes that location data and interactions will not be linked to the Apple account. Usage data will neither be stored nor shared with third parties.

New Content and Minor Additions

In addition to functional changes, iOS 26.5 also brings new content. This includes a wallpaper as part of the Pride Collection: “The matching iPhone and iPad wallpapers feature a complementary, cheerful, and dynamic design with the same customizable colors.”

In the beta phase, Apple also tested additional features in the EU for more openness of the operating system. These include simplified Bluetooth pairing through proximity and support for notifications and live activities for devices from other manufacturers such as headphones and smartwatches.

When Will the Update Arrive?

Typically, the final version of an iOS update is released within a week after the release candidate is published. iOS 26.5 is therefore expected to be available on Monday, May 11, for all compatible devices. This includes iPhone 11 and newer, as well as iPhone SE 2nd generation and newer.
