After iOS 17.3 introduced a range of new features to the iPhone, including protection for stolen devices, the scope of the subsequent update is unusually limited.
The next major iOS version is scheduled for March. In the meantime, Apple is releasing an update in the form of iOS 17.3.1. Apart from a very important bug fix, the software brings no visible changes for users.

iOS 17.3.1 Fixes Text Processing Errors
The following information about the content of iOS 17.3.1 can be found on the Apple Support page and in the release notes in the update settings on the iPhone:
This update includes bug fixes for your iPhone, including:
- Text may unexpectedly appear twice or overlap when typing
In recent weeks, users have increasingly complained that text disappears or input is obscured while typing. This issue affects not only iPhones but also Macs and iPads. TECHBOOK has also encountered the problem on a MacBook Pro. So far, the only solution is to remove the entire text and restart the respective app.
Beyond this, Apple does not provide further details on other bug fixes included in the new iOS version. TECHBOOK has also checked the support page for security updates. There, Apple only states that iOS 17.3.1 does not contain any “published CVE entries [known vulnerabilities and exposures].”
We expect major changes with iOS 17.4, which will bring several new features, especially for the EU–including sideloading and alternative payment methods.
Should You Install the Update Immediately?
If you have been affected by the text bug, it is best to install iOS 17.3.1 right away. The update is only a few hundred megabytes, so installation doesn’t take much time.
iOS 17.3.1 is available for iPhone XS and later. The same bug fix is also available as iPadOS 17.3.1 for iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation and later), iPad Pro 10.5, iPad Pro 11 (1st generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad (6th generation and later), and iPad mini 5th generation and later. For Macs, macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 is available as an update and also fixes the error.
