A swollen battery can not only limit smartphone use but also become dangerous. Reports are increasing for the Pixel 7a, and Google has responded by offering assistance. Those affected can expect a replacement or a refund.
Owners of the Pixel 7a are increasingly reporting battery issues. Google is now offering a free battery replacement or financial compensation, depending on the country of purchase and warranty claim.
More Reports of Battery Issues with Google Pixel 7a
More and more Pixel 7a users are reporting noticeable battery issues online. Forums such as Reddit or the official Google Support Forum are seeing an increase in reports of swollen batteries, reduced battery life, and other battery problems–in a smartphone model that was launched just about two years ago. Google has now responded and is offering affected users concrete support.
Google Launches Battery Replacement with Preliminary Check
As reported by “Computer BILD” (part of Axel Springer SE like TECHBOOK), Google provides information on its official support pages about how the replacement process works. Initially, users can check via an online tool whether their device is eligible for a battery replacement. In the next step, the device can either be sent to Google or dropped off at an authorized service partner.
Before the replacement, the condition of the smartphone is checked. Google will only replace the battery for free if no other damage is found that is due to external influences. For example, if there is damage from a fall, the battery replacement could incur a charge.
Regional Restrictions and Conditions
Google offers the program only for devices purchased in certain countries. These include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Malaysia, the European Economic Area (including Germany), Japan, and Singapore. And only in certain countries can customers submit their device by mail or in-store.

Alternatively, Google offers compensation for devices out of warranty. This can be in the form of a voucher worth $300 for the purchase of a new Pixel model in the Google Store–approximately 263 euros. Those who opt against a new device can instead receive a one-time payment of around 176 euros ($200). However, if the smartphone is still under warranty, Google offers up to $456 (about 400 euros) as a payout.

Do Not Underestimate Swollen Batteries
According to Google, only a small portion of devices are affected–still, the company advises caution. A swelling battery can not only impair the smartphone’s function but also pose a serious risk. The expansion can damage components, and the risk of overheating, fire, or in the worst case, an explosion increases if the battery casing ruptures.
Users should therefore watch for signs such as a bulging back or unusual heat development and should not continue to use an affected device. Instead, proper disposal or directly taking advantage of the replacement program is recommended.
