Before the annual developer conference Google I/O on May 19 and 20, 2026, in Mountain View, California, Google held “The Android Show.” This event focused on products for users, with the upgrade of the AI assistant Gemini to Gemini Intelligence in Android 17 being the main highlight.
Deep Integration of AI in Android
Gemini Intelligence is an assistant system that will be available on various devices such as Android smartphones, Googlebooks, and Android Auto. Instead of a separate app, the AI is directly integrated into devices to automate tasks across apps. This automation allows the AI to independently handle complex tasks like making reservations or gathering information from multiple apps.
A key advantage is that Gemini Intelligence can take on tasks like creating notes or recognizing content in photos. For example, a photo of a shopping list can be enough for the AI to research the items and add them to the cart. Google emphasizes that control always remains with the user and the AI acts only on explicit command.

Google Update Brings Practical Functions for Android Smartphones
Gemini Takes Over Autofill
Gemini Intelligence is also coming to the Chrome web browser on Android. By the end of June, the assistant is expected to make researching, summarizing, and comparing web content easier. It can take over recurring tasks like booking appointments or making reservations.
The “Autofill with Google” feature is also getting a Gemini update, allowing the autofill function to complete more fields in apps and the browser automatically. This is based on information from the Google account and connected apps–such as passport images in Google Photos. Additionally, Google is introducing “Rambler,” an AI feature in Gboard that edits spoken texts and removes filler words without storing data on external servers.
Android 17 Brings Personalized Widgets
Google is expanding the functionality of widgets with the ability to create custom widgets via voice input. Users can describe what they expect from a widget, and the AI implements it. Examples include widgets for recipes, fitness, or weather data. These can be used on smartphones and Wear OS watches.
Also of interest: Even before release–Samsung is already working on Android 17
The rollout of Gemini Intelligence begins in the summer on Samsung Galaxy and Pixel smartphones. Android 17 is required for this. While specific models were not mentioned, support for the latest Pixel 10 and S26 models is likely. More Android devices are expected to follow throughout the year.
