On September 9, Apple will unveil the iPhone 17. The four new models–17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max–are expected to go on sale in mid to late September. Yet, compatible cases are already available in online stores. How is that possible?
Cases First, Then iPhone 17
Whether on Amazon, AliExpress, or well-known accessory manufacturers like ESR–cases for the iPhone 17 are already widely available. The smartphone hasn’t been officially announced, nor has Apple revealed the design. Yet, the cases seem custom-made. They not only account for the new camera bar on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the entirely new iPhone 17 Air, but also the altered position of the Apple logo and the new arrangement of MagSafe magnets in transparent cases.
TECHBOOK has closely followed the leaks about the iPhone 17, and we can confirm that the cases for sale align with information from leakers and industry insiders. However, the design is not confirmed. Did the manufacturers of the iPhone 17 cases simply guess the design?
Accessory Manufacturers Receive Dimensions First
In fact, the general dimensions of an iPhone are determined relatively early in the development process. While details like materials, logo placement, and internal components can change in later stages, dimensions, curvature, spacing, and the size of buttons, as well as the placement of cameras, microphones, and LEDs, remain consistent.
Apple often communicates the external dimensions to accessory manufacturers more than six months before the actual launch. This is because they need to adjust their manufacturing machines and processes to the new design to offer their products in time for the launch.
Often, iPhone accessory manufacturers are the first sources of leaked images of new devices. Although Apple likely has confidentiality agreements with them, not all adhere strictly to them. For savvy leakers, the information from case manufacturers is extremely valuable. Based on the dimensions they receive, initial renderings can be created, which are already a good indicator of the final design.
