With all the features modern smartphones offer today, the battery often can’t keep up. It’s often drained after just one day–or even faster. However, one setting can save energy and extend the battery life. TECHBOOK explains how it works.
Our phones are in constant use every day. It’s no wonder they sometimes lack the necessary energy. Video applications like YouTube or Netflix, as well as apps like WhatsApp, consume a lot of energy because they are used continuously. But there’s a trick to save energy and increase the smartphone’s battery life. The solution is: screen timeout. With a simple change in the settings, you can adjust the display time and save energy around the clock.
Increase Battery Life with a Simple Setting
If you don’t touch your phone’s touchscreen, the display automatically dims after a certain period. How long a display stays active is set in the settings. The longer the period, the more energy the display consumes–especially if the screen is bright. Reducing the screen time can save energy and increase the battery life.

On an iPhone, you can reduce the time for automatic screen shutdown in the phone’s settings to increase battery life. Under the section “Display & Brightness,” you’ll find “Auto-Lock” and can minimize it to 30 seconds.
On Android devices, users can also change the time until the screen locks in the settings. In the menu “Display,” you can adjust the time until the screen dims and saves power in the “Screen Timeout” section. The function may be named slightly differently depending on the device. Typically, timeframes between 15 seconds and up to 30 minutes are available.

Dark Mode and Other Settings Can Help
What can further extend a battery’s life is the general regulation of brightness. While most smartphones now have an automatic brightness display, it can still be manually overridden. It may help to adjust the slider slightly downward. Additionally, activate Dark Mode to save energy, as it turns off pixels. On most devices, this option can be found under “Display” or “Display and Brightness.”
Additionally, you should cut unnecessary connections in the background. When connected to Wi-Fi, you can disable the “Mobile Data” option. The same applies to functions like Bluetooth or NFC.
