Ironically, one of the oldest tools on Instagram is suddenly up for debate: hashtags. While many creators still rely on tried-and-true strategies, Meta is rolling out a surprising update–turning the platform’s logic on its head.

What does it mean for reach when only a few tags are allowed instead of a flood of keywords? And why might this be a clue to where Instagram’s algorithm is really headed? Since its founding in 2011, hashtags on Instagram have been considered a central tool for increasing reach. Users could use up to 30 keywords per post to reach as many people as possible. But in early December, Meta launched a test that drastically reduced this number to three hashtags per post.

The test has now become a reality. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, only a few hashtags per post are officially allowed from now on. However, instead of the three used in the test, they have settled on five hashtags. As the platform explains, they found that “using fewer (up to five), but more targeted hashtags instead of many general ones can improve both the performance of your content and the user experience on Instagram.”

Platform Focuses on Content Instead of Keywords

Even though hashtags were long considered the key to visibility, the behavior of the Instagram algorithm has changed significantly. For years, the system has been analyzing content directly–such as through image content or description texts–and targeting it to interested users.

Hashtags are playing an increasingly minor role. Instead, relevant keywords in the description text are gaining importance. According to Mosseri, hashtags primarily serve to categorize content, not as a reach booster.

The reduction of hashtags on Instagram affected many users during the previously launched test and came as a surprise to many. Now the change is officially decided and will be implemented for everyone. Influencers, who heavily rely on hashtag reach, are particularly reacting with confusion.

Background of the Measure Still Unclear

Why Meta is limiting the number of hashtags on Instagram has not been officially explained beyond the rather general comment on performance. It’s conceivable that it’s an optimization of the recommendation system or a stronger integration of artificial intelligence that categorizes content without keywords. It’s also possible that Meta wants to make it clear that hashtags on Instagram no longer hold the significance they once did.
