In this series, TECHBOOK presents the best iPhone hacks and tricks–with video and detailed instructions. This time, we have some practical tips for the iPhone calculator.

Since its launch in 2007, the iPhone has had an impressive history. Besides its hardware, which millions eagerly await each year at the Apple keynote, Apple has also continuously expanded the accompanying iOS operating system. With each version, the range of functions has grown. Some changes are heavily promoted by Apple, while others are discovered only when exploring the OS. In our video series “iPhone Hacks,” TECHBOOK showcases the best and most practical of these features. Part 4 focuses on practical tricks for the iPhone calculator.

The tricks for the iPhone calculator are also available in the video:

How It Works

When you open the calculator on the iPhone, it initially looks like a regular office calculator. However, the app has a trick up its sleeve: Rotate the iPhone 90 degrees, and the keypad shifts to the right, revealing a scientific calculator with numerous additional functions.

With the calculator app, you can not only use parentheses but also perform square roots, exponentiation, trigonometric functions, and factorials. Sine and cosine are available in the iPhone calculator, along with the square root symbol and a direct code for fraction calculations.

Another practical trick: While there is no button to delete individual numbers or characters, a simple swipe left or right over the display field performs this function. This can save you from having to re-enter a calculation from scratch.

By the way, Apple’s voice assistant Siri can also perform calculations, partially replacing the standard iPhone calculator. She can handle simple calculations easily if you ask, “Siri, what is 24 times 37?” The voice assistant can also perform percentage calculations.
