A strange error is currently occurring with Google Maps. The app no longer displays alternative routes—neither within the app itself nor on Android Auto. Users are understandably frustrated.
A technical issue with Google Maps is currently causing frustration, especially among drivers. Both in the mobile app and under Android Auto, the usual alternative route suggestions are missing during navigation. As various reports indicate, a significant number of users are affected by the problem. However, it remains unclear whether the absence of alternative routes in Google Maps is a temporary glitch or a permanent change, as the company has remained silent.
Currently No Alternative Routes in Google Maps
Normally, Google Maps offers different routes for navigation, allowing users to choose based on traffic conditions. However, this feature now seems to be missing in several versions of the application. Instead of suggestions for faster or slower routes, only the main route is visible.
User reports highlighting the issue are accumulating on various platforms such as the Google Forum and Reddit. This indicates that it is not an isolated incident. Colleagues from “9to5Google” were also able to replicate the problem. A test with a Pixel 9 Pro Fold via Android Auto showed no alternative routes for them either.
Most user reports, however, originate from the U.S. It is quite possible that the issue is primarily occurring there. In a test by TECHBOOK, various routes were offered, such as avoiding highways.

Why the Majority of All Android Smartphones Are Insecure
What Could Be the Cause?
Google has not yet publicly commented on the error. Therefore, the scope and spread can only be speculated. However, it is certain that the first user reports date back to early May. There has been enough time for Google to address this.
Since Google remains silent, users are speculating themselves. They suspect a recently released app update or a server-side issue as the cause of the missing alternative routes in Google Maps.
It is not yet clear whether Apple CarPlay is also affected. Some users report a slowed map display and stuttering in the app, but not a complete failure of alternative routes. As a possible solution, they recommend deleting the app data of Google Maps in the settings—after which navigation works more smoothly again.
