WhatsApp is working on introducing usernames, similar to Telegram and Signal. Users will soon be able to chat anonymously without revealing their phone numbers.
Last year, WhatsApp tested the use of unique names on Android. Now, a similar feature has appeared in a beta version of the app for iOS. The new system aims to enhance security and privacy.
Name Instead of Phone Number for More Privacy in WhatsApp
To use WhatsApp, entering a phone number is required. This number is visible to all contacts, even if you prefer to keep it private—such as when your child uses the app or you are active in groups where participants are not close friends or family. However, according to “Computer BILD” (like TECHBOOK, part of Axel Springer SE), a new feature is expected soon that will prevent chat partners from seeing your number.
WhatsApp is apparently preparing to introduce names that users can choose themselves. Similar to Telegram or Signal, users will soon be able to communicate with others without revealing their own number. The feature was discovered by WABetaInfo in a recent TestFlight beta version for iOS (Version 25.17.10.70). The feature is still in development and not yet accessible to beta testers. However, indications suggest that WhatsApp is working on the user interface and rules for using names in the app.

Strict Guidelines for Names in WhatsApp
Specific guidelines for choosing a name in WhatsApp are intended to prevent misuse such as identity theft and phishing. The username must be between three and 30 characters long and cannot start with “www” or end with domain extensions like “.de” or “.com.” Additionally, only characters such as lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores are allowed.
