Apple has made the App Store safer in several countries. Since February 24, 2026, certain content can only be downloaded by adult users. This affects apps with an “18+” rating in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore. Users who do not confirm their age cannot download these apps.

In Brazil, the age verification affects not only traditional adult content. Games with mechanics resembling gambling also fall into the highest age category. According to “Apple,” systems where random-based rewards or similar elements are central to the game are automatically considered not suitable for minors. Installation is only possible after age confirmation. This ensures that children and teenagers are not exposed to inappropriate content.

Implementation in the U.S. by State

Age verification in the U.S. is implemented differently depending on the state. For Apple accounts created in Utah from May 7, 2026, the new rule applies. In Louisiana, new accounts must confirm the age category starting July 1, 2026. Developers can access age information for apps through an interface. Existing accounts are not automatically classified initially. This is how Apple responds to the varying legal requirements in the states.

Technical Basis Without Birth Dates

The age verification is based on the “Declared Age Range API.” This programming interface only transmits the belonging to an age group—child, teenager, or adult—and not the exact birth date. This allows content or functions to be age-appropriately controlled without sharing detailed personal data. The system is flexible and allows Apple to digitally reflect regional differences in regulation. Age information thus becomes a central control instrument for app distribution.

Looking at Europe: Digital Age Verification Planned

Whether Apple will introduce age checks in other regions is not yet clear. However, the European Union plans to introduce the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUid) by the end of 2026. This digital solution will allow users to verify their age with minimal data sharing. It is planned for online services with age restrictions, such as social networks, streaming services, or digital gambling offers. App stores are not explicitly included so far.
