Proton is advancing its AI chatbot Lumo and launching a new generation with Version 2.0. The Swiss company aims to close the gap with well-known offerings such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. At the same time, the focus remains on data protection.
While many AI services store data or use it to train their models, Proton claims to take a different approach. This is intended to appeal especially to people who are concerned about the secure handling of their data, even with sensitive information.
Lumo Focuses on Data Protection
Lumo has been part of Proton’s offerings since 2025. The company is best known for its VPN service but now also offers other alternatives to Google services, such as email and cloud services, with a focus on data protection. The AI chatbot plays a similar role to the Gemini app.
According to the company, a zero-access encryption protects the content of conversations. This means that even Proton cannot access the chats. Additionally, conversations are not stored or used for AI training. Proton uses a European infrastructure for operations. Instead of a self-developed language model, Lumo relies on various open-source models.

Version 2.0 Expected to Be Significantly More Powerful
With Lumo 2.0, Proton promises a major performance leap. The new models are expected to deliver better results, especially in logical reasoning and more complex tasks. According to Proton, Lumo 2.0 Lite achieves about 127 percent higher in the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index than Lumo 1.4. The most powerful model, Lumo 2.0 Max, is expected to surpass its predecessor by 240 percent. How the new version compares directly with ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude is not yet known.

With the new version, Proton expands Lumo’s functionality. The chatbot can now analyze and generate images directly in the chat. Additionally, the web search has been improved and provides current sources.
New storage functions allow users to manage projects and contexts. Furthermore, users can create their own assistants to automate recurring workflows.
Availability and Pricing
Lumo 2.0 will be released on June 30, 2026. In addition to a free version, Proton offers several paid subscriptions. Lumo Plus is aimed at individual users and costs about 12.99 euros per month. The subscription includes additional features and more powerful models.
Lumo for Business is available for teams and companies. This package includes additional management tools and supports secure collaboration. The price is about 14.99 euros per user per month.
