Microsoft is expanding Teams with a feature designed to make knowledge and skills within companies more transparent. In the future, employees’ competencies can be displayed directly in their profiles. The goal is to quickly find the right contacts for specific tasks–without lengthy inquiries or detours.

Especially in larger organizations, it’s often unclear who possesses which expertise. Skills are present but not immediately visible. The new Teams feature aims to address this issue and simplify everyday work communication.

Skills Directly in Teams Profile

Microsoft plans to display selected competencies directly in Teams profile cards. These cards appear in chats, meetings, or channels, among other places. Information such as knowledge of programming languages, project management, or design can be visible. This allows for a quick assessment of who is suitable for a particular question.

Additionally, Microsoft is integrating the feature with the AI assistant Copilot. Employees can specifically ask who in the company has certain skills and receive corresponding suggestions.

Automatic Suggestions from Everyday Work

The foundation is the so-called “People Skills” system in Microsoft 365. Colleagues can enter their skills themselves or confirm skills suggested by Microsoft. These suggestions are based on daily work in Microsoft 365, such as documents, projects, or tasks a person was involved in.

LinkedIn also plays an important role. The professional network has been part of Microsoft since 2016. Qualifications from LinkedIn profiles can be integrated into the Teams profile and are thus directly available in the work context.

Initial Launch on Desktop

According to the Microsoft roadmap, the new skills display is set to launch in March 2026. Microsoft initially plans to introduce it for the desktop versions of Teams on Windows and macOS. Whether and when the feature will also be available in the web version or mobile apps is still open. However, it is considered likely that Microsoft will gradually expand the feature set after a trial phase.
