Update: After Meta recently only hinted at this, it’s now official. In a new blog post, the company announced that a proper WhatsApp app for iPad is now available. It includes all the relevant and familiar features that users already know and expect for the tablet. Additionally, WhatsApp is set to benefit from iPadOS multitasking features such as Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over. The app is now available for download in the App Store.

The original message follows:

Today, almost anything should be possible with any technical device. Whether smartphone or laptop, everything is internet-enabled and interconnected. Means of constant communication should not be missing. Until now, however, a dedicated WhatsApp app for the iPad was missing, even though Apple tablets are very popular worldwide. But now the wait might finally be over.

Meta hints at its own WhatsApp app for iPad

Meta counts billions of users worldwide for WhatsApp. Undoubtedly, the application reaches numerous people, but Apple tablet owners have so far been officially left out. While there are workarounds to install WhatsApp on the iPad, a native and optimized app has been missing until now.

This seems to bother affected users. On X (formerly Twitter), a user wrote: “They should add WhatsApp to the iPad.” The operators of the official WhatsApp account saw this and responded with an emoji that just peeks with two eyes:

Meta hasn’t revealed much more in this way. However, since it is the official channel, the reaction can be understood to mean that the company is at least keeping an eye on the topic. In fact, there is already a dedicated WhatsApp app for the iPad.

However, it has been in beta testing for years and is therefore not yet accessible to the general public. Meta’s recent reaction to the X post could now mean that the testing phase is nearing its end and the iPad application will finally be rolled out to everyone very soon.

How the internet reacts

Under the X post from WhatsApp, there are already several comments with different reactions. While some are pleased and urgently need a dedicated WhatsApp app on the iPad, others wonder why it doesn’t already exist.

Others, however, seem sarcastic to annoyed: “iPad users are getting all excited about something Android has had for a decade,” writes one user. Another comments: “Now finally release it, it’s pathetic that we don’t have a proper app for iPadOS.”

And of course, there are also those who believe that instead of WhatsApp, one should simply use other messengers like Signal. When the WhatsApp app for the iPad will ultimately be released is still unknown.
