Meta is ending a previously optional security feature on Instagram. This involves end-to-end encryption in direct messages. Until now, users could voluntarily activate this encryption on Instagram.
Unlike many other messaging services, this security feature was never enabled by default on Instagram. Instead, users had to consciously select it. According to Meta, this option was rarely used.
Low Usage Leads to Feature’s End
As the company reports, encryption for Instagram messages will be completely discontinued on May 8, 2026. The basis for this decision is the low demand. The U.S. magazine “The Verge” reports this, citing company information.
With the removal of this feature, Meta will be able to access content from Instagram chats in the future. This also includes the potential sharing with law enforcement agencies. The company has faced criticism for years over its handling of user data. In the past, there have been several data scandals where personal information was leaked to third parties.

What Happens to Existing Chats
Users who have saved encrypted conversations on Instagram will reportedly receive timely notifications. These will explain how to secure the data before it is deleted. This requires the current version of the Instagram app.
Those who wish to continue communicating securely are referred by Meta to WhatsApp. The messenger also belongs to the company and continues to use end-to-end encryption. However, WhatsApp is also regularly criticized by data protection advocates.
