Teenagers are often more adept at using social networks than their parents. It doesn’t have to be that way. Instagram provides guardians with a guide for safe usage.
Concerned about what your kids are doing on social networks? With a few settings, you can make surfing safer for teenagers. Instagram offers guardians a guide in collaboration with the EU initiatives Klicksafe.de and SaferInternet.at, as well as the project Stop Hate Speech. Here’s an overview of some of the most important settings.
Manage Privacy
If you don’t want your child’s content to be visible to everyone on or off Instagram, you can review the privacy settings with your child. You can switch from a public account to a private one, making content visible only to followers. For minors signing up for Instagram for the first time, the setting is automatically set to “private.”

Block Accounts
People your child doesn’t want to interact with on Instagram can be blocked. By clicking on the profile of the contact to be blocked and then clicking on the three dots in the top right corner, you can access the option. You can also block any new accounts a blocked user creates. Blockings can be lifted in the settings. Users are not notified about these actions.
Set Usage Time
In your profile, under “Your Activity,” you can see how much time your child spends on Instagram daily on average. If you’ve agreed on a specific usage time with your child, you can set a daily reminder at the same place once the agreed time is reached. This can help reflect on usage behavior.
