Sending messages, photos, videos, or voicemails—we share our most intimate things with friends or family via WhatsApp. But an app makes it possible for others to read your entire chats if you’re not careful—and it comes from WhatsApp itself!
The WhatsApp Web feature allows you to use the chat service from your PC. It’s convenient if you don’t want to constantly reach for your smartphone to chat. Some people simply prefer typing on a PC keyboard. However, the program can also become a security risk if misused. Others can read your WhatsApp chats!
Overview
Using WhatsApp Web Correctly
To log into WhatsApp Web, you need the phone where you normally use WhatsApp and a laptop with a current browser version. You can access the site at web.whatsapp.com. There, you’ll be prompted to scan a QR code. Do this by selecting “WhatsApp Web” in the menu at the top right of your smartphone app and tapping the plus symbol. WhatsApp will then access the camera to activate the QR code. In no time, all your chat histories will appear on the tablet, laptop, or PC.
Anyone who uses your phone for even a few seconds while it’s unlocked can easily scan the code and subsequently read all your WhatsApp chats. This can happen if you leave your phone on the table while going to the restroom, are at the other end of the room, or during a lunch break, and don’t properly log out of WhatsApp Web.
Protecting Yourself from Phone Spying
With a few tricks, you can protect your chat histories from prying eyes. First, always log out from all devices except the smartphone you use for WhatsApp Web. You can check if you’re logged in from a secondary device in the app menu under Settings at WhatsApp Web. There, you can not only connect with a device but also see a list of previously connected browsers and the access date. Directly below the list, you can log out from all other devices or tap the specific option individually.
You can also disconnect directly through the browser version of WhatsApp. To do this, open the menu above the chat list, marked by three vertical dots. There, you’ll find the option “Log out.”
Additionally, always use password protection on your smartphone’s display. Even if you trust your friends, think carefully about who you hand your phone—and all your secrets—to. Then, what should remain secret will stay secret.

Key Points Summarized
To ensure no one reads your WhatsApp messages unnoticed, you should follow some protective measures:
- Regularly log out of WhatsApp Web
Open the WhatsApp app on your phone, go to Settings → WhatsApp Web, and check the list of connected devices. There, you can log out of WhatsApp from all browsers with a click. - Disconnect on the PC as well
In the browser version, click on the three dots at the top and select “Log out.” This ensures no one else has access to your chats. - Activate display lock
Use a PIN, password, or biometric lock (fingerprint/face recognition). This prevents unauthorized people from unlocking your phone and logging in. - Don’t leave your phone unattended
Even brief moments—during lunch breaks or restroom visits—are enough for someone to access your WhatsApp chats.
Up to Three Years Imprisonment Threatened
By the way, if others read your messages via WhatsApp without your knowledge, it’s not a minor offense. Anyone who intercepts data without authorization under Section 202b of the German Penal Code faces up to two years’ imprisonment. If the perpetrator has spied on data under Section 202a that was not intended for them and was even secured with special access, they face up to three years’ imprisonment.
