Deleted WhatsApp messages are not lost forever; there are even several ways to recover them. Both the sender and the recipient of the deleted message can still access the already removed text. TECHBOOK shows how it’s done!

Pressed the send button too soon, discovered an embarrassing autocorrect error, or wrote in the wrong chat—the reasons for deleting a WhatsApp message can be varied. Since 2017, the messenger has allowed its users to remove already sent messages from the chat history. However, this does not mean that the message is gone forever and irretrievably. TECHBOOK shows how you can access a message even after the deletion process.

Deleted WhatsApp Messages Are Not Permanently Gone

For several years now, WhatsApp users have had the option to remove messages from the chat history. To do this, the respective message must be selected by tapping on it and holding. Then, in the appearing options bar, the “Delete” icon is visible, on Android in the form of a trash can, and on iOS with the icon as well as the word “Delete.”

Afterward, you can choose whether to delete the message only for yourself or for everyone. Instead of the sent text, it then says: “You deleted this message.” You can remove this display from your own history by repeating the deletion process. But beware—the recipient will still see that you deleted a message, which can also lead to awkward questions.

For security reasons, WhatsApp does not permanently remove these messages. Instead, the messenger logs and stores them. In principle, the message is not deleted but simply no longer visible. However, it is still fully present in the chat log.

More on the topic

Make Deleted WhatsApp Messages Visible Again

Option 1: Display Messages in Quotes

In certain situations, deleted messages can still be displayed. This also offers the first option to view them again after deletion. If someone in the chat has quoted the removed text, the quote is still visible to everyone in the chat, even if this is no longer true for the original message. This is because, in the case of a quote, the message is actually copied and reinserted as an independent message by the quoter.

Option 2: Use an App to Restore

Apps like Notification History Log, which create their own logs, can help read already deleted messages. However, these usually need to be installed in advance—after the deletion process, it’s too late because the applications only start recording from the time of installation. Be aware that you must grant the apps full access to your WhatsApp account.

Install the app and allow it WhatsApp access. Under the “Advanced History” tab, you can see all incoming notifications. Go to the WhatsApp notification and then to the deleted message. Under the notification about the deletion of the text, which is also visible in the regular chat, the original message is now also displayed.

Option 3: Activate and View Notification Log

The app is practical and especially interesting for iOS users. Android users, on the other hand, can access a similar feature directly on their own device since some version updates. This shows all incoming notifications from the past 24 hours. And yes, if you received a message that was subsequently deleted, you can still see the original message in it. Here we explain how to activate the notification history on Android.

But keep in mind that you must have previously activated the respective app notifications. This applies to WhatsApp as well as all other applications. The history only registers push notifications. If these are inactive and you receive new messages during that time, they will not appear in the history.

Option 4: Create a WhatsApp Backup

WhatsApp also allows you to back up chats. This is especially useful if you want to get a new phone and transfer your chats. If the deleted message is stored there, you can restore it via the backup.

However, this option is severely limited. It only works if the backup was created after the sender posted the message in the chat and also before it was deleted. Additionally, you must then completely remove the app from the smartphone and set it up again.

Tricks Don’t Work With Self-Deleting Messages

Self-deleting messages on WhatsApp cannot be restored after they disappear. Unlike manually deleted messages, they cannot be made visible again through the quoting function or other detours. The content is automatically and permanently removed from the chat after the set time expires. Only if the message was previously seen or externally saved, such as via a screenshot, or briefly still visible in a push notification on the lock screen, can its content be preserved.

This means specifically: Once the self-deleting message is gone, it’s gone. Screenshots, notifications, or old backups do not make it accessible again, but only preserve the content if it was already or accidentally outside the chat.
