Android Auto is behaving differently than expected for some users. Those who recently used Gemini in their car might now see an old acquaintance on the display.
After switching to Google’s AI assistant, the current development initially seems contradictory. Gemini was introduced to Android Auto starting in November 2025 and reached many users in Germany only in early April 2026. Now, several affected users report a surprising change after a new update: Google Assistant is reappearing, while Gemini is missing. “9to5google.com” points to numerous reports in the official Google Forum.
No Planned Step Back by Google
However, one should not infer a permanent comeback from the current display. While some might be pleased with the old assistant, as Gemini was not well-received by everyone, it apparently is not an intentional step backward. According to the report, Google has already confirmed the error. However, there is no solution yet.
The bug comes at a bad time for Google. The company wanted to prominently feature Gemini in Android Auto and replace the previous Assistant. If the old service suddenly reappears, it is unfortunate for the introduction of the new AI offering. For users, this means: If Gemini is no longer available after the update, it is very likely due to the app itself.

How Gemini Can Reappear
Until Google provides an update, there is a possible workaround. You need to open the settings in Android Auto and go to “Voice Assistance.” There, first select Google Assistant and close Android Auto. In the final step, restart the app. A prompt should now appear indicating that Gemini is also available alongside Google Assistant. By selecting Gemini, the AI assistant can be used again.
Whether this process works for all affected users is unknown. However, it might be worth a try. Those not in a hurry are better off waiting for an official correction from Google.
