With “ChatGPT Work,” OpenAI is advancing its chatbot into a productivity platform. The new AI agent is designed to handle tasks independently for hours, accessing apps, files, and company services.
ChatGPT to Take Over Entire Workflows
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT with a new work agent called “Work.” Unlike a traditional chatbot, this one doesn’t just answer individual questions but is meant to handle entire projects independently. The AI breaks down complex tasks into multiple steps, researches information, analyzes data, and creates finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or even web applications.
The technical foundation is the new GPT-5.6 model family with the Sol, Terra, and Luna variants. According to OpenAI, it performs more reliably on multi-step tasks than previous models and aligns more closely with provided templates and reference files. Users can track progress at any time, answer follow-up questions, or adjust the task during processing.

Integration with Gmail, Slack, and Google Drive
To provide ChatGPT Work with the necessary context, the agent can connect with numerous services. Through a shared plugin directory, OpenAI supports Gmail, Google Drive, Slack, Microsoft Teams, calendars, project management tools, and CRM systems.
This allows ChatGPT to, for example, analyze current emails, merge information from multiple sources, and automatically create meeting documents or presentations. Additionally, workflows can be planned and automated. They can start at a set time, be executed regularly, or be triggered by specific events.
Desktop App Combines Chat, Work, and Codex
The desktop application is also receiving extensive updates. In addition to an integrated browser for research, the “Computer Use” function is available. It allows ChatGPT to operate local programs, input text, or move files. This development is turning the service from an AI assistant into a platform for complex work processes.
In parallel, OpenAI is simplifying its software landscape. The previous ChatGPT desktop app will be renamed “ChatGPT Classic.” The former Codex app will become the new central desktop application, integrating Chat, Work, and Codex. The app will be available worldwide for Windows and macOS and is generally free. The Work function will initially be available to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, with Plus and Business users to follow later.
