iPhone owners who regularly browse the App Store for available updates are currently encountering curious version notes from Apple. For numerous third-party apps, there’s a note indicating that not the developers, but the company itself has provided an update. What’s behind this?
Identical Description for Different Apps
As an app developer writes on Reddit, Apple provided an update for his own app without his knowledge. The developer couldn’t determine if any changes were made to the code, but the version notes are identical to a previous update he uploaded for his app. “MacRumors” has discovered other apps like “Candy Crush Soda Saga” and “Catan Universe” with the exact same update description.
TECHBOOK was able to verify this for “VLC media player” and a companion app for a fitness tracker. In all cases, the update page in the App Store features the following description: “This update from Apple will improve the functionality of this app. No new features are included.”
Below are the version notes from the respective app developers themselves. Apple’s addition appears both in apps that haven’t been updated for a while and in those with recent updates. A common pattern is not yet discernible.
What’s in the Updates?
What specific adjustments Apple is making with these updates is currently unclear. “MacRumors” couldn’t find any changes even after checking the app code. It seems to be a system-side adjustment rather than a classic app update.

On Reddit, commentators write that Apple has previously adjusted the binary file for compatibility reasons. It has also happened that the company intervened with third-party software due to issues with app certificates. TECHBOOK has asked Apple for clarification but has not yet received a response.
