Google is expanding child protection in the Play Store. With a new age verification system, apps will soon be able to automatically determine which content is suitable for users. The global rollout has already begun.
New Age Data for Apps
Google has announced that it will make the so-called Play Age Signals API available to developers worldwide. This interface is intended to help apps provide age-appropriate content and security features. Until now, the system was only available in Brazil, but it is now being gradually expanded to other countries.
The idea behind it: Parents can voluntarily enter their child’s age group, such as “13 to 15 years” or “16 to 17 years.” The respective app then receives a corresponding notice without knowing the exact age or any other personal data. Adult users can also provide their age if needed. According to Google, the solution is designed to be particularly privacy-friendly and does not disclose sensitive information.

Less Effort for Parents
For families, the new feature is primarily intended to simplify the management of child protection settings. Instead of having to search for suitable security options in each individual app, age approvals are centrally managed via the Google app “Family Link”.
Parents themselves decide whether to share their child’s age group with apps. If approval is given, compatible applications can automatically adjust their content. This is intended to provide children with quicker access to age-appropriate offerings. Google emphasizes that age information is not shared by default and that approval can be revoked at any time.
Part of a Larger Security Strategy
The new age verification complements existing protective measures in the Google Play Store. Apps aimed at children and families are already subject to particularly strict requirements. Developers also have tools available to restrict access to certain applications.
Family Link already offers numerous control options for parents. These include download approvals, content filters, screen time restrictions, and PIN-protected settings. With the Play Age Signals API, another element is now being added to simplify child protection and give developers more opportunities to tailor their offerings to different age groups.
