OpenAI is reportedly continuing its efforts to integrate its AI more deeply into its own hardware. In recent months, various rumors have circulated about possible devices. Among those mentioned were a pen-like input device, the audio gadget “Sweetpea” in the style of in-ear headphones, and a smartphone. However, a different product now appears to be emerging as a potential entry into the hardware business. According to a report, the company is initially planning a smart speaker that aims to bring ChatGPT directly into everyday life.
Speaker to Be Flexibly Usable in the Home
According to information from the news magazine “Bloomberg,” the device will not have a screen. Instead, OpenAI is reportedly focusing on a speaker that can be moved flexibly between different rooms thanks to an integrated battery. For example, it could be used in the kitchen and later continue in the living room or bedroom.
In addition to playing music, the device is expected to answer questions and assist with processing messages. It should also be able to control connected home technology. Those who wish to use the speaker permanently in one location can also connect it to the power grid.
GPT-Live Takes Over Voice Control
GPT-Live is set to serve as the central voice interface. This is an advanced version of the ChatGPT voice mode that OpenAI released earlier this month. The system can listen and speak simultaneously. It is also designed to adapt more naturally to the flow of conversation and process information quickly.
Additionally, OpenAI reportedly plans to use a camera and other sensors. These are intended to capture the environment and provide the AI with additional information, allowing the system to better understand situations and requests.
System to Understand Users Better Over Time
According to the report, the technology is expected to increasingly adapt to its owners. The system learns more about its users over time and can independently provide information. Personal data such as emails could also be considered.
Furthermore, there is talk of movable mechanical elements. These are supposed to move on their own and make the speaker appear more lively. However, which components are meant and what these movements will look like is not yet known.

The planned features could raise questions about data protection, particularly in Europe. The speaker is not only supposed to evaluate emails but also capture its surroundings using a camera and other sensors.
According to the General Data Protection Regulation, OpenAI would need to disclose which data is processed, on what basis, and for what purpose. The company would also be required to collect only the necessary information and implement appropriate protective measures. Questions about storage duration, potential data transfers outside the EU, and control options for users would also need to be addressed.

Market Launch Planned for 2027
Currently, OpenAI is planning to introduce the speaker in 2026. According to the report, the sales launch is scheduled for 2027. However, the device is expected to be just one part of larger hardware plans.
According to Bloomberg, the company is also considering an AI pendant, devices for home robotics, and even a potential smartphone replacement in the long term. Whether OpenAI can establish itself in the hardware market with such products remains to be seen. A previous hardware-related project was not successful: The browser Atlas, which was launched in October 2025, will be discontinued on August 9, 2026. Some of its features, however, are expected to be integrated into the new desktop app. This makes the planned speaker the next significant test for OpenAI outside of ChatGPT.
