More and more smart TVs display sponsored banners during programming or various applications, including LG TVs. Read on TECHBOOK how to turn off the annoying ads.

If you have an LG smart TV with the webOS operating system, you might be familiar with the issue: Sponsor banners appear during various applications, such as when accessing the homepage. This is particularly bothersome on LG TVs when the full-screen view is activated, as the ads take up a lot of screen space. TECHBOOK experimented a bit and found out how to turn off ads on LG TVs.

Learn how to generally disable ads on a smart TV in our TECHBOOK Basics video:

How to Turn Off Ads on LG TVs

To turn off ads, access the settings on your LG TV. You can find them using the gear button on the remote control. First, select “All Settings” and then “General” to reach the “Additional Settings” menu. The “Advertising” sub-menu will lead you to the ad settings.

You’re almost there: You can now disable “Home Promotion.” This will replace the annoying, dynamic ad block with a static webOS banner, which you might find easier to tolerate.

Also interesting: Smart TVs are becoming more capable–but be cautious with your data!

Some Ads Remain

Even though you can disable the pop-up sponsor blocks in the way described–unfortunately, LG TVs can’t be completely ad-free. Users will continue to be informed about new movie releases and services they haven’t yet used. LG also reserves the right to highlight currently popular streaming content.

Why Smart TV Advertising Is So Attractive

More and more companies are investing in digital TV advertising. From a marketing perspective, it’s highly effective. Unlike traditional TV advertising, which potentially reaches the entire country (including viewers outside the targeted demographic), smart TV advertising drastically minimizes waste. It specifically targets consumers who tend to be affluent and have purchasing power, and it can be further customized, such as tailored to a desired geographic area. That’s why manufacturers don’t make it easy for customers to turn off ads on their smart TVs, like LG TVs.
