The online game “Eve Online” is unexpectedly receiving financial support from the U.S. Google has invested several million dollars, securing a minority stake in the developer studio Fenris Creations. The studio is closely tied to the game’s history, which launched in 2003 and continues to be developed today.
The space MMO is known for its complexity and has built a loyal community over many years. Although the game’s peak period is behind it, it remains relevant to many fans. According to a report from “Bloomberg,” Google’s interest is not in the game’s economic success. Instead, the company has a different goal in mind.
AI to Learn from Player Decisions
At the center is Google’s AI system DeepMind. The company aims to train the artificial intelligence using Eve Online. According to a company spokesperson, the focus is on skills like long-term planning and the ability to learn from experience. Google currently sees weaknesses in its AI in these areas.
To improve this, DeepMind will analyze player behavior. Isolated servers will be used, allowing the AI to observe how users behave in the game. Eve Online offers numerous opportunities for decision-making and individual paths, making it particularly interesting for Google as the AI is expected to develop its own strategies from this diversity.

Developer Hilmar Veigar Pétursson also describes the game as a kind of social simulation that provides insights into human behavior. These characteristics make the MMO a suitable foundation for the further development of DeepMind.
Impact on the Player Community
For the Eve Online community, the collaboration initially brings mixed impressions. On one hand, it means player activities will be observed in the future. On the other hand, Fenris Creations and Google promise that users will also benefit from the partnership.
The plan is to develop new player experiences based on DeepMind technology. Specific details are not yet available. However, it is clear that the investment is likely to strengthen the game’s future. Further expansions and spin-offs are already planned.
It’s not new for Google to use games for AI development. The company has already experimented with titles like “StarCraft 2” and classic arcade games to improve its systems.
