“The Witcher” is the flagship for the Polish developer studio CD Projekt. It only makes sense to expand the series further. Among other things, the studio is planning a remake–and a completely new trilogy!

After the fiasco at the launch of “Cyberpunk 2077,” CD Projekt is refocusing on the series that originally made the studio famous: “The Witcher.” The fantasy RPG is based on the popular books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and now includes several sequels and spin-offs. CD Projekt plans to expand the series further–with five new titles.

Major Success for CD Projekt with “The Witcher”

The first part of the “Witcher” series was released in 2007, marking the debut game of what was then a relatively small studio. Using a modified BioWare engine, the game made quite a splash at the time, though it plays quite differently from its successors. The title continues the story of Sapkowski’s books. At the end of the novel series, the witcher Geralt and his lover, the sorceress Yennefer, are stabbed by a mob and taken to safety by Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter, with an uncertain fate. “The Witcher” brings the witcher back years later with memory loss and brings Sapkowski’s diverse medieval fantasy world to life graphically for the first time.

The main series continues this new story seamlessly in the following parts. The third installment, “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” has been one of the most successful video games in the world since its release in 2015. A significant part of this success was the in-game card game Gwent, which now has two or three spin-offs. The latest “Witcher” title, “Monster Slayer,” brings the franchise to mobile devices for the first time.

These “The Witcher” games have been released by CD Projekt so far:

  • 2007 – The Witcher
  • 2011 – The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
  • 2015 – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (with the DLCs “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine”)
  • 2018 – Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
  • 2018 – Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
  • 2021 – The Witcher: Monster Slayer

More Planned “Witcher” Games

Under rather ominous titles, CD Projekt has announced new “Witcher” games alongside a sequel to “Cyberpunk 2077″–as reported by TECHBOOK. We now know some details about what these project names entail.

Polaris–A Brand New “Witcher” Trilogy

With the announcement of the “Polaris” project, it’s clear that “Witcher 4” is coming! However, as has been speculated, it seems that witcher Geralt will not be the central figure. An initial teaser image revealed the title “The Witcher: A New Saga Begins,” along with a new witcher medallion featuring a lynx head.

What–or who–could the lynx medallion represent?

The medallions each represent a different witcher school. From the books, we know the schools of the Wolf, to which Geralt belongs, the Griffin, and the Cat. The games also introduce the schools of the Bear, Manticore, and Viper. The Lynx school is actually based on fan fiction and is founded in this context by the witcher Lambert and his new partner Keira Metz. The challenge in this specific setting is that Keira’s survival in “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” depended on several player decisions. Perhaps her appearance in “Witcher 4” will, like its predecessor, rely on a possible import function of old game saves.

Most theories, however, suggest a different main character despite the lynx medallion: Ciri. As a child of the Elder Blood, she possesses special powers and was already an important character in the third video game and, of course, the books. Her ability to travel between worlds would offer developers several possibilities.

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed “The Witcher 4” for 2028.

Canis Majoris–CD Projekt Plans Remake of “The Witcher”

It is now known that “Canis Majoris” stands for a planned remake by CD Projekt. Specifically, it concerns the first part of the “Witcher” series. The studio announced this publicly through several channels.

With The Witcher, everything started for us, for CD Projekt RED. It was the first game we ever made–and it was a big moment for us back then. Returning to this place and redeveloping the game so the next generation of players can experience it feels just as big, if not bigger. Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on this project is equally exciting, as some of the people there were already involved in the Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much players have been looking forward to the remake, and they know how to develop incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we can reveal more about and from the game, I know the wait will be worth it.

A remake can mean many things: a revamped title that adheres to the original gameplay or a game that brings additional areas around Vizima and a host of new quests. The release of the “The Witcher” remake is not yet known but is expected after “Witcher 4″–and thus not before 2028.

Sirius–Unknown Project for a Larger Audience

Little is known about “Sirius” so far. We only know that it will not be a classic “Witcher” game but is intended to appeal to an even broader audience. The studio The Molasses Flood, primarily known for survival titles, is responsible for its development. Could this be a hint at a genre shift?

Great Potential in New “The Witcher” Installments

In general, the announcements of so many new “Witcher” games caused quite a stir–even in the TECHBOOK editorial team. Each project is exciting in its own right. However, the “The Witcher” remake particularly captivated editor Marlene Polywka.
