Sony is working on a new mobile PlayStation. The device is expected to use a 2-nanometer chip from AMD and support both PS5 and future PS6 games. Rumors suggest that the handheld is being developed under the codename ‘Jupiter.’
In November 2023, Sony took a surprising step with the release of the PS Portal, a handheld device that serves as an extension for the PlayStation 5. Now, there are indications that Sony is working on a full-fledged PlayStation handheld that could potentially revolutionize the market for mobile consoles.
New PlayStation Handheld with Codename “Jupiter”
Since April 2025, there have been rumors about a new PlayStation handheld device from Sony. Insiders report that the new console is expected to be less powerful than the PS5 but still capable of supporting PS5 and future PS6 games. A 15-watt SoC (System-on-a-Chip) is expected to be used inside the console. The leaker Jukanlosreve has revealed additional information on the platform X.
Internally, the new handheld device is referred to at Sony under the codename “Jupiter.” According to Jukanlosreve, the device operates with a specially developed 2-nm chip from AMD, manufactured using Samsung’s SF2P process. This chip is said to be particularly energy-efficient, a crucial factor for a handheld device that must offer long runtimes without a power outlet. However, the collaboration between AMD, Samsung, and Sony is not yet finalized, and the details of the deal remain unclear.

Sales Launch Likely Not Until 2028, If at All
The sales launch of the new Sony console is expected no earlier than 2028. Other sources are slightly more optimistic, suggesting a possible release in 2027, potentially alongside the PS6 launch. However, everything remains speculative until Sony makes an official announcement.
Even the U.S. news service Bloomberg reported in November 2024, citing insider sources, that the new PlayStation handheld might never see the light of day. “Sony’s portable device is likely still years away from launch, and the company could still decide against bringing it to market,” the assessment stated.
