About three years after the introduction of the PlayStation Portal, there are increasing indications of new hardware. Fresh certification entries are now fueling speculation about technical improvements and a possible OLED display.
The PlayStation Portal might be up for a revision. This is suggested by new entries at the Wi-Fi Alliance, first reported by “The Verge.” Two previously unknown Sony devices with model numbers CFI-Y1019 and CFI-Y1039 have appeared there. The designations match Sony’s Portal series but differ from the models known so far.

Sony has not officially confirmed the devices yet. However, certification entries are often an early indication of upcoming hardware. The data does not directly reveal what changes the new models might bring. This has sparked numerous speculations in the gaming community.
Not Just OLED in the Mix
A possible OLED screen is among the most frequently discussed improvements. The current PlayStation Portal uses an eight-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and 60 hertz. Switching to OLED could result in more vibrant colors, better contrasts, and deeper blacks.
However, the certification documents do not provide concrete evidence for this. A more tangible detail is another feature. According to the entries, the new models support Wi-Fi 6E. This is an extension of the Wi-Fi 6 standard that also uses the 6 GHz band. The existing PlayStation Portal only supports Wi-Fi 5. For a streaming device, this could mean a more stable connection and lower latency.
Sony Continues to Develop the Platform
The PlayStation Portal was released at the end of 2023 and is fundamentally different from devices like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. Instead of running games directly, the handheld streams content from a PlayStation 5 to its integrated display.
Since its market launch, Sony has expanded the Portal’s features multiple times. Particularly important was the introduction of a cloud gaming beta for selected PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. This shows that Sony continues to expand the platform. Whether the newly certified models actually represent a new PlayStation Portal with an OLED display or other new hardware remains open. Until an official announcement, the hints are primarily an exciting rumor for PlayStation fans.
