One of the major innovations fans can expect with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is the mouse mode of the revamped Joy-Cons. However, the narrow gamepads have been criticized for being somewhat cumbersome during gameplay, not only by TECHBOOK but also by colleagues at Computer Bild during an initial hands-on event. But now there’s hope, as it appears gamers can also connect regular USB mice to the console.

Developer Demonstrates New Mode of the Switch 2

The reason for this assumption comes from a video about the title “Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition” by publisher Koei Tecmo Games. It’s a strategy game already available for the Nintendo Switch and is set to be released for the console’s successor as well. In the video, developer Michi Ryu initially demonstrates the controls using two Joy-Con-2 controllers, one of which is in mouse mode.

Ryu then switches during the game from the mouse Joy-Con to a standard USB mouse. The switch is immediate, and an information window in the upper left corner of the game screen indicates that a new USB device has been connected, which the console now primarily uses. The other Joy-Con remains in use, apparently for other control functions.

More Mouse Games on the New Switch?

In principle, a mouse and keyboard could also be connected to the Switch 1, but very few games supported them. Instead, many games were optimized for the native input methods of the Nintendo console. However, since the Switch 2 will come with a mouse function built-in, this is likely to change with upcoming releases. As the console appears to be designed for input using two devices, the chances are good that a keyboard can also be used with the Switch 2.
