Sony releases a fresh update for the PlayStation 5. However, not every console benefits equally from the changes. One model even gets better graphics.
The new firmware version is labeled 26.02-13.00.00 and is available for both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro. However, the benefits are not the same for all users. While both consoles receive minor updates, the most significant improvements are seen on the more powerful PS5 Pro.
How the Graphics Are Improved
A key component of the PS5 update is the optimization of the so-called PSSR technology. Behind the name “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” is an upscaling process developed by Sony in collaboration with AMD. Game graphics are analyzed at the pixel level and then upscaled, resulting in visibly sharper and clearer images. The technology is already supported by several games, including “Silent Hill f,” “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” “Monster Hunter Wilds,” “Alan Wake 2,” and “Control.” The upcoming “Crimson Desert,” set to release on March 19, 2026, will also use this feature. Additional titles like “Cyberpunk 2077” and “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” are expected to follow soon.
Optimized games automatically use the technology. Those who want to test it further can manually activate it. The option is found in the menu under “Screen and Video” in the “Video Output” section.

New Modes for All PS5 Models
In addition to the technology, the update brings changes to the user interface. A new showcase mode is now available in the so-called Welcome Hub. This mode ensures that the selected background image is fully displayed during inactivity. Once the console is used again, the usual interface returns.
Additionally, there is a slideshow mode. This allows a complete photo album to be set as the background, with images automatically changing and appearing sequentially as wallpaper. The selection is made directly through the media gallery. Settings also allow users to specify when the showcase mode is activated.
The update also brings new emojis to the PS5, based on the Unicode 17.0 standard. These are available regardless of the model. According to Sony, messaging functions and navigation have been revised in some areas, though the company does not provide specific details.
