Emulators are popular among gamers since powerful PCs can now handle demanding console games. The necessary software often comes from projects on GitHub. Cybercriminals are apparently exploiting this behavior by releasing manipulated programs that mimic well-known emulators.
As the online magazine Engadget reports, the dangerous GitHub pages pose as prominent PS5 emulators like Kyttyps5 or AnyPS5. This is particularly tricky because emulator fans are accustomed to downloading experimental software. Programs from such projects also do not always have a digital signature. A convincing copy can make a fake repository appear legitimate at first glance.
Malware Evades Microsoft Defender
After downloading, the malware attempts to hide from Microsoft Defender. It sets up exceptions so that certain content is no longer checked by the antivirus. An infostealer then lands on the computer. This type of malware is designed to capture passwords and other personal information. Finally, a script tries to remove traces of the infection.

What Gamers Should Watch Out For
Before downloading, it’s worth taking a close look at the GitHub project. Users should check whether the repository actually belongs to the official development team. A very new project with little activity can be a warning sign. Antivirus protection should always remain on during download and installation.
