Since the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, the console has been in short supply. Occasionally, small batches appear at retailers, but they sell out quickly. Now, Amazon has announced the upcoming availability of the PS5.
While Sony is already selling a new version of the PS5 in Australia, the original version of the gaming console is not even truly available here. According to insider information, Amazon has received a total of 15,000 of the current gaming consoles. Of these, 10,000 are said to be the model with a disc drive, while the remaining 5,000 are apparently the digital edition of the PS5.
PS5 on Amazon: Do Prime Members Get Priority?
There is currently confusion about a note on Amazon’s PS5 product pages. As of this morning, the sentence “Prime members have priority access to the PlayStation 5” was visible. However, the note has since disappeared. Whether Amazon will actually prioritize its Prime members when purchasing the PS5–similar to offers on Prime Day–remains to be seen.
It is also not yet clear when the retailer will actually start the sale. The last time Amazon offered the PS5 was back in mid-July. At that time, the PS5 with a disc drive was available for 499.99 euros, and the Digital Edition for 399.99 euros. Online, there are already tickers reporting on the current status of the new sales action. Observers expect that Amazon could start the sale at any moment. Typically, offers of this kind are released by the retailer during the week and in the early morning to late morning hours. Regularly updating the product pages is therefore worthwhile for those looking to secure a PS5 on Amazon.

PS5 Availability a Disaster
Even before the PlayStation 5 was unveiled almost a year ago, the console was heavily hyped. Fans from around the world eagerly awaited the update. Many of them were disappointed, however, as the PS5 was not available in many places. The shortage continues to this day. As early as May 2021, Sony stated that they could not keep up with production–painting a grim picture of PS5 availability.
In the meantime, the console is occasionally available at individual retailers. Whether buyers can get one is a real gamble. Offers from the mail-order company Otto and Euronics this week were snapped up in minutes. This is likely to be the case with the PS5 sale on Amazon as well.
Given Sony’s statement and the information available to us, it is currently not expected that the availability of the current PlayStation will change anytime soon. More on this in our TECH Talk:
