The USB port of a TV is not sufficient to power the Fire TV Stick. In some cases, it can even disable the streaming stick. TECHBOOK explains why.
Amazon ships the Fire TV Stick with a cable and power adapter, even though almost every TV has a suitable USB port for power supply. The idea of connecting the USB cable directly to the TV initially sounds practical, as all the technology remains elegantly hidden behind the screen. However, this solution has a significant drawback: The stick can suddenly stop working.
Updates Without a Power Adapter Can Be Dangerous for the Fire TV Stick
The power adapter for the Fire TV Stick is not provided as optional equipment. Despite the simplicity of operating the streaming stick via the TV’s USB port, it is advisable to free up an outlet for the power adapter. While many TV USB ports do supply power, it is very limited. The power supply is sufficient for the Fire TV Stick only until a higher demand arises, such as during updates.
Like any internet-connected hardware, the Fire TV Stick requires regular updates to its operating system. These updates are often not particularly extensive, but the installation of new firmware must not be interrupted. The firmware controls the basic functions of the Fire TV, and without it, the device is unusable. If the stick’s power consumption during an update exceeds the power provided by the TV’s USB port, the stick can enter a kind of standby coma.
Pay Attention to the Right Power Adapter
Especially for high-performance models like the Fire TV 4K or 4K Max, it is advisable to use only the supplied power adapter. If the original power plug is missing, a regular USB power plug can be used as long as the specifications are correct: at least 5 volts and 1 ampere, which equals 5 watts. These values must be marked directly on the plug according to regulations. Some USB ports on TVs also provide enough power to support streaming hardware, but standard USB ports are often not strong enough.
