Deutsche Telekom plans to expand its business in Poland by investing around one billion euros. The plan includes the complete acquisition of the fiber-optic operator Fiberhost and the internet and TV provider Inea.

Fiber-optic Network to Strengthen Landline Business

For Telekom, Fiberhost’s network is particularly significant. According to the company, the infrastructure reaches more than 1.4 million households in eight of Poland’s 16 regions.

The fiber-optic lines run through more than 9,700 towns and villages. This would provide T-Mobile Polska with a larger foundation to further expand landline services in Poland. Currently, the Telekom subsidiary primarily uses the networks of other providers in the landline sector. Inea also relies on external network infrastructure today.

Integration of Mobile and Fiber-optic Planned

Telekom plans to more closely integrate its existing mobile and 5G network with Fiberhost’s fiber-optic connections. This would allow mobile and internet services to be more comprehensively offered from a single source.

At the same time, dependency on external network operators would decrease. For T-Mobile Polska, this would be an important step in strengthening its own infrastructure business.

Fiberhost plays a special role in this. The company emerged from Inea’s former network business, which was spun off in 2021 and has been operating independently since then.

Network to Remain Open to Competitors

According to Telekom, little will change for other internet providers despite a change in ownership. The Fiberhost network will continue to operate under the open-access principle.

Existing and future providers will still be able to use the lines under fair and equal conditions. This means the infrastructure will not be exclusively reserved for T-Mobile Polska.

However, the purchase is not yet finalized. Although Telekom has already agreed with the current owners on the acquisition, which includes the infrastructure fund Macquarie and other minority shareholders, the Polish competition authorities must still approve the transaction before it can be completed.
