Swedish payment service provider Klarna is entering the mobile communications market. The company is now offering its own plan in the United States. Germany and the United Kingdom are expected to follow in 2025. The setup is entirely managed through the Klarna app.
Klarna is likely known to most users for its payment services–similar to PayPal. Now, the Swedish provider aims to expand its portfolio as a neobank with its own mobile offering. The first mobile plan has just launched in the U.S. For $40 a month, users there get unlimited calls, texts, and 5G data–without throttling. Germany and the United Kingdom are also on the horizon as the next markets, though a specific launch date has yet to be announced.
Klarna Plan Launched in the U.S.
The unique aspect of Klarna’s mobile plan is its entirely digital management. Both ordering and organization are done completely through the Klarna app, including activation and cancellation. The offer does not include a physical SIM card but is instead fully realized through an eSIM. Therefore, an eSIM-capable smartphone is required to use the mobile plan. Users can transfer their existing phone number if they wish.
The German-American “Telecom-as-a-Service” startup Gigs provides the technical foundation for Klarna’s new mobile plan in the U.S. The network is provided by AT&T. However, it is still unclear which network operator the provider will partner with domestically. Klarna has also remained silent on the exact terms of the mobile plan when it launches in Germany.
For the U.S. market, the company offers a true flat rate, allowing unlimited calls, texts, and 5G internet browsing. The plan can be canceled monthly and does not include a fair-use policy, which many other mobile providers require. This policy is intended to prevent users from excessively using the unlimited plan and consistently drawing high data.

Launch in Germany Already Confirmed
After the launch in the U.S., Klarna plans to introduce the plan in Germany and the United Kingdom. Details on price, network, or performance in these countries are still missing. However, it is certain that the model will be rolled out internationally and will be expanded with premium options and offers for travelers in the future.

With the launch of its own mobile plan, Klarna is following a trend in the fintech sector. N26 and Revolut already offer their own plans in Germany. The goal of these companies is to bundle banking, shopping, and now mobile services in one app–an approach that has already been successfully implemented by the Brazilian Nubank.
